How the Etsy tax calculator works

Enter your sales, then everything it cost to make and sell them. The calculator subtracts the costs to find your net profit and estimates self-employment tax and federal income tax on it. Sellers often pay far less than they fear on sales alone, but only if their costs are tracked.

What to include as costs

  • Materials and inventory used for items you sold.
  • Etsy and payment fees: listing fees, transaction fees, processing fees and advertising.
  • Shipping and packaging you paid for.
  • Tools and equipment, and a dedicated workspace using the simplified home office method ($5 per square foot, up to 300).

Platform tax forms report gross sales, not profit, and reporting thresholds have changed over time. Your income is taxable either way, and your costs are what reduce it.

Sales tax is separate. This tool covers income tax and self-employment tax. Sales tax collected on your behalf by marketplaces or owed in your state is outside this calculator.

How taxes work for Etsy sellers

Etsy sellers are treated as independent contractors, so nothing is withheld from your payouts. You are responsible for two federal taxes on your net profit (income minus allowable business expenses):

  • Self-employment tax of 15.3%, made up of 12.4% Social Security and 2.9% Medicare, applied to 92.35% of your net profit. The Social Security part stops at $184,500 of earnings in 2026. Half of this tax is deductible when working out income tax.
  • Federal income tax at your bracket rates, after the standard deduction ($16,100 single, $32,200 married filing jointly, $24,150 head of household for 2026) and, for most people at these income levels, the 20% qualified business income (QBI) deduction.

Because no tax is taken out for you, the IRS expects estimated payments during the year, due April 15, June 15, September 15 and January 15 for the 2026 tax year. A good habit is to move your estimated set-aside percentage into a separate account every time you are paid.

Deductions creators commonly use

Etsy sellers are taxed on profit, so every legitimate business cost reduces the bill:

  • Cost of goods sold: materials, blanks, wholesale items.
  • Fees from the marketplace and payment processors.
  • Shipping supplies, postage and packaging.
  • Photography equipment, software and subscriptions.
  • A dedicated home workspace using the simplified method.

Keep a simple spreadsheet and your receipts. If you make items as a hobby, different rules apply, so ask a professional if you are unsure.

Worked example

Imagine a seller with $24,000 of Etsy sales, $3,000 from other online sales and $1,000 of other income, $28,000 in total. With about $15,000 of costs (materials, fees, shipping and a 100 sq ft workspace), net profit is $13,000. Self-employment tax is about $1,837 and federal income tax about $0, so the total estimate is $1,837, or about 14% of profit and $459 per quarter.

Quarterly estimated taxes for creators

Platforms usually pay creators gross, with no income tax taken out, so the IRS expects estimated payments during the year. For the 2026 tax year the due dates are April 15, June 15, September 15 and January 15, 2027. The calculator divides your estimated yearly tax by four as a starting point. If your income is uneven, as it often is for creators, you may pay different amounts each quarter. See IRS Publication 505 for safe-harbor rules that can protect you from underpayment penalties.
