How the TikTok tax calculator works
Add what TikTok paid you, your brand deals and any other creator income, then your business expenses. The calculator finds your net profit, estimates self-employment tax and federal income tax, and shows a set-aside percentage and a quarterly payment.
What counts as TikTok income
- Platform payouts such as creator rewards and gifts you can cash out.
- Brand deals, including products received when they have a market value.
- Affiliate and shop sales after your costs.
Income is taxable whether or not you receive a form. Multiple platforms add together for tax purposes.

How taxes work for TikTok creators
TikTok creators are treated as independent contractors, so nothing is withheld from your payouts. You are responsible for two federal taxes on your net profit (income minus allowable business expenses):
- Self-employment tax of 15.3%, made up of 12.4% Social Security and 2.9% Medicare, applied to 92.35% of your net profit. The Social Security part stops at $184,500 of earnings in 2026. Half of this tax is deductible when working out income tax.
- Federal income tax at your bracket rates, after the standard deduction ($16,100 single, $32,200 married filing jointly, $24,150 head of household for 2026) and, for most people at these income levels, the 20% qualified business income (QBI) deduction.
Because no tax is taken out for you, the IRS expects estimated payments during the year, due April 15, June 15, September 15 and January 15 for the 2026 tax year. A good habit is to move your estimated set-aside percentage into a separate account every time you are paid.
Deductions creators commonly use
You are taxed on profit, so track costs from the beginning:
- Phones, cameras, microphones and lighting used for content. Larger purchases may be deducted over several years or sometimes in one.
- Editing apps, music or sound licences and design tools.
- Props and products bought for content, when they are a business expense and not personal use.
- Payments to editors, managers or designers.
- A business share of phone and internet bills.
Keep receipts and a note of the business purpose. Personal items are not deductible.
Worked example
Take a creator with $6,500 from TikTok, $5,000 from brand deals and $1,200 of other income, a total of $12,700. With about $3,800 of expenses, net profit is $8,900. Self-employment tax is about $1,258 and federal income tax about $0, for a total of roughly $1,258, or about 14% of profit and $314 per quarter. That leaves about $7,642 after tax.
Quarterly estimated taxes for creators
Platforms usually pay creators gross, with no income tax taken out, so the IRS expects estimated payments during the year. For the 2026 tax year the due dates are April 15, June 15, September 15 and January 15, 2027. The calculator divides your estimated yearly tax by four as a starting point. If your income is uneven, as it often is for creators, you may pay different amounts each quarter. See IRS Publication 505 for safe-harbor rules that can protect you from underpayment penalties.
Frequently asked questions
Do I pay taxes on TikTok earnings?

Often yes, at their fair market value, when received in exchange for promotion. A tax professional can confirm your case.
What can TikTok creators deduct?

Is this the same math as the YouTube calculator?
Yes. Both are self-employment income, so the tax rules are the same. Only the inputs and examples differ.
