How the Instacart shopper calculator works

Add up your batch earnings and tips for a typical week, then enter the hours you spent working and the miles you drove. The calculator estimates gas and car costs, deducts supplies you buy yourself, and then applies the 2026 federal tax rules to find your take-home per hour.

This tool is for independent contractor shoppers. Employees, including in-store shoppers on a payroll, have taxes withheld and generally cannot deduct unreimbursed mileage on their federal return.

What affects a shopper’s real hourly pay

  • Shopping and waiting time. Time in the store, at checkout and between batches is part of the job. Count it all.
  • Batch size versus distance. A bigger batch can mean more pay per mile, but heavy orders and long drives can erase the gain.
  • Multiple stops. Miles to the store and between customers all count toward gas and wear.
  • Supplies. Insulated bags and a phone plan share are common expenses; enter them in the other-expenses field.

The mileage deduction in 2026

Most drivers use the IRS standard mileage rate rather than tracking every car expense. For 2026 the IRS first set the business rate at 72.5 cents per mile, then revised it to 76 cents per mile for miles driven from July 1, 2026. The rate covers gas, wear, insurance and depreciation (the IRS treats 35 cents of each mile in 2026 as depreciation), so you generally cannot also deduct those costs for the same vehicle.

  • You need a record of each business trip: date, miles and purpose. A mileage app or a simple log both work.
  • If you own the car, you generally must choose the standard rate in the first year you use it for business to keep that option later.
  • Commuting miles are not deductible. The rules for the drive to your first stop of the day are nuanced, so keep records and ask a tax professional about your case.

The standard rate is a tax number, not your real cost. That is why this calculator shows two views: your cash profit using your real gas and car costs, and your tax using the IRS mileage deduction.

How taxes work for independent Instacart shoppers

Independent Instacart shoppers are treated as independent contractors, so nothing is withheld from your payouts. You are responsible for two federal taxes on your net profit (income minus allowable business expenses):

  • Self-employment tax of 15.3%, made up of 12.4% Social Security and 2.9% Medicare, applied to 92.35% of your net profit. The Social Security part stops at $184,500 of earnings in 2026. Half of this tax is deductible when working out income tax.
  • Federal income tax at your bracket rates, after the standard deduction ($16,100 single, $32,200 married filing jointly, $24,150 head of household for 2026) and, for most people at these income levels, the 20% qualified business income (QBI) deduction.

Because no tax is taken out for you, the IRS expects estimated payments during the year, due April 15, June 15, September 15 and January 15 for the 2026 tax year. A good habit is to move your estimated set-aside percentage into a separate account every time you are paid.

The qualified tips deduction

For tax years 2025 through 2028, eligible workers can deduct up to $25,000 of qualified tips from taxable income. The deduction phases out at higher incomes, applies only if your occupation customarily receives tips under Treasury rules, and for the self-employed it cannot exceed the profit of the business that earned the tips. It lowers income tax only. It does not reduce self-employment tax. This calculator applies the deduction to the tips you enter, so check eligibility for your situation before relying on it.

Worked example

Take a shopper who earns $520 in a week including $150 in tips, over 24 hours and 300 miles. Gross pay is $21.67 per hour. Gas is about $38 and other car costs about $30, leaving $18.21 per hour in cash profit. The mileage deduction is about $223 for the week, so estimated tax is only about $40 a week (about 14% of profit), and take-home is near $16.54 per hour. A batch needs to earn clearly more than $0.23 per mile just to cover driving costs.

Don’t forget your car’s depreciation. Cash profit ignores the value your car loses with every mile. The IRS counts 35 cents per mile as depreciation in 2026, which is why a job can look profitable in cash and still be a poor deal once you account for wear. If you want a harsher test, add a few cents per mile to the “other car costs” field.

Choosing batches

Before accepting, estimate the total miles (to the store, between stops, and home to your next area) and compare the pay with your cost per mile from the results. Also consider how long the shop will take. A batch that pays well per mile but ties you up for an hour in the store may produce a worse hourly figure than two smaller ones.

Frequently asked questions

Are Instacart shoppers employees or contractors?

Most full-service shoppers work as independent contractors, while some in-store shoppers are employees of the retailer or platform. This calculator is for contractors. Check your own tax forms to see which applies to you.

What expenses can Instacart shoppers deduct?

Common ones include business mileage (or actual car costs), a business-use share of your phone plan, insulated bags and other supplies. You need records for each.

Are tips taxable?

Yes, tips are income. Some qualifying tips may also be eligible for the temporary qualified tips deduction, which reduces income tax but not self-employment tax.

How much should I save for taxes?

Use the set-aside percentage in the results as a starting point and move that share of every payout into a separate account. Your own percentage depends on income, filing status, state and other income.

Can I use this if I shop for Instacart and drive for another app?

Yes. Combine your total earnings, hours and miles across apps for the week so the tax estimate reflects your full self-employment income.
