How the Grubhub driver calculator works

Add up your delivery pay and tips for a typical week, then enter the hours you were available and the miles you drove. The calculator estimates gas and car costs, subtracts small expenses such as a phone share or delivery bag, and applies the 2026 federal tax rules to find your take-home per hour.

What affects a delivery driver’s real hourly pay

  • Waiting time. Time spent waiting for offers or for food to be ready is part of your day. Use all available hours for an honest hourly figure.
  • Distance per order. Long drives on low-paying orders can erase the profit. Compare pay with total miles, including the trip back to a busy area.
  • Tips as income. Tips are taxable, although some qualifying tips may be eligible for the temporary qualified tips deduction.
  • Using several apps. If you also work for other delivery services, combine your totals so the tax estimate covers all of your self-employment income.

The mileage deduction in 2026

Most drivers use the IRS standard mileage rate rather than tracking every car expense. For 2026 the IRS first set the business rate at 72.5 cents per mile, then revised it to 76 cents per mile for miles driven from July 1, 2026. The rate covers gas, wear, insurance and depreciation (the IRS treats 35 cents of each mile in 2026 as depreciation), so you generally cannot also deduct those costs for the same vehicle.

  • You need a record of each business trip: date, miles and purpose. A mileage app or a simple log both work.
  • If you own the car, you generally must choose the standard rate in the first year you use it for business to keep that option later.
  • Commuting miles are not deductible. The rules for the drive to your first stop of the day are nuanced, so keep records and ask a tax professional about your case.

The standard rate is a tax number, not your real cost. That is why this calculator shows two views: your cash profit using your real gas and car costs, and your tax using the IRS mileage deduction.

How taxes work for Grubhub delivery drivers

Grubhub delivery drivers are treated as independent contractors, so nothing is withheld from your payouts. You are responsible for two federal taxes on your net profit (income minus allowable business expenses):

  • Self-employment tax of 15.3%, made up of 12.4% Social Security and 2.9% Medicare, applied to 92.35% of your net profit. The Social Security part stops at $184,500 of earnings in 2026. Half of this tax is deductible when working out income tax.
  • Federal income tax at your bracket rates, after the standard deduction ($16,100 single, $32,200 married filing jointly, $24,150 head of household for 2026) and, for most people at these income levels, the 20% qualified business income (QBI) deduction.

Because no tax is taken out for you, the IRS expects estimated payments during the year, due April 15, June 15, September 15 and January 15 for the 2026 tax year. A good habit is to move your estimated set-aside percentage into a separate account every time you are paid.

The qualified tips deduction

For tax years 2025 through 2028, eligible workers can deduct up to $25,000 of qualified tips from taxable income. The deduction phases out at higher incomes, applies only if your occupation customarily receives tips under Treasury rules, and for the self-employed it cannot exceed the profit of the business that earned the tips. It lowers income tax only. It does not reduce self-employment tax. This calculator applies the deduction to the tips you enter, so check eligibility for your situation before relying on it.

Worked example

Take a driver who earns $560 in a week including $190 in tips over 26 available hours and 380 miles. Gross pay is $21.54 per hour. Gas is about $46 and other car costs about $38, leaving $17.91 per hour in cash profit. The mileage deduction is about $282 for the week, so estimated tax is about $38 a week (about 14% of profit) and take-home is near $16.45 per hour. Each mile earned $1.47 and cost $0.22 in gas and car costs.

Don’t forget your car’s depreciation. Cash profit ignores the value your car loses with every mile. The IRS counts 35 cents per mile as depreciation in 2026, which is why a job can look profitable in cash and still be a poor deal once you account for wear. If you want a harsher test, add a few cents per mile to the “other car costs” field.

Choosing which orders to take

Divide the order’s pay by the miles it will take, including the drive to the restaurant. If it is not clearly above your gas-and-car cost per mile, it may cost more than it earns before your time is counted. Your own figure depends on your car, so enter your real numbers above.

Frequently asked questions

Are Grubhub drivers independent contractors?

Most Grubhub delivery drivers work as independent contractors for tax purposes, so taxes are not withheld from payouts. Check your own tax forms to confirm how you are classified.

Do I have to pay taxes on Grubhub tips?

Yes, tips are income. Some qualifying tips may also be eligible for the temporary qualified tips deduction, which lowers income tax but not self-employment tax.

What can Grubhub drivers deduct?

Common deductions are business mileage (or actual car costs), a business-use share of your phone plan and delivery supplies. Keep a record of each trip and receipt.

How much should I save for taxes?

Use the set-aside percentage in the results as a starting point and move that share of every payout into a separate account. Your own percentage depends on income, filing status, state and other income.

Can I use this for DoorDash or Uber Eats too?

Yes. The math is the same for any delivery app where you are an independent contractor. Enter your own earnings, hours and miles.
